When to look up

Best times and conditions for auroras

Season: late August – mid April

Lapland needs dark skies. September–October and February–March are often the best months, with long nights and active skies around the equinoxes.

Time: 21:00 – 02:00

Auroras can appear any time it is dark, but activity usually peaks around late evening and midnight.

Clear skies matter most

Even strong auroras are hidden by thick cloud. Check the cloud cover above — under 30% is ideal.

Get away from lights

Leave town lights behind. Lakes, open fells and forest clearings give the darkest, widest view of the sky.

Be patient and dress warm

Auroras come in waves. Plan to stay out for an hour or more in thermal layers, with a warm drink.

Photography tips

Use a tripod and long exposure (5–15 s), or your phone's night mode. Turn off the flash.
